Total Hip Replacement
Total Hip Replacement is indicated when there is advanced wear and tear in the hip joint leading to severe pain and mobility problems
Total Hip Replacement is indicated when there is advanced wear and tear in the hip joint leading to severe pain and mobility problems. The femoral head (ball of the hip joint) is removed surgically and replaced with an artificial ball and socket system. Either a metal backed plastic shell or a plastic shell on its own is inserted inside the cup of the joint (acetabulum) followed by insertion of a metal stem inside the femur (thigh) bone along with either a ceramic or a metal ball. This procedure is successful in improving the hip arthritis pain and restoring mobility.
Total Knee Replacement is indicated when there is advanced wear and tear in the knee joint and when other forms of non-operative treatment for arthritis have failed to provide pain relief and the pain is compromising the quality of life and the mobility of the person. During the procedure a measured sliver of worn out (arthritic) bone ends are removed and coated with metal implants followed by insertion of a plastic insert between the metal implants, in order to recreate the knee mechanics and movement. This procedure usually results in improvement of the severe knee pain and restores the knee alignment.
Total Knee Replacement
Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged knee joint with an artificial implant to alleviate pain and restore function.
Knee arthroscopy and meniscal procedures
Meniscal cartilage is important structure inside the knee joint that provides shock absorption and stability to the joint.
Meniscal cartilage is important structure inside the knee joint that provides shock absorption and stability to the joint. Tears in this important structure can happen due to trauma or due to degeneration and this could result in mechanical symptoms such as clicking and locking. If symptoms persist in spite of other non-operative measures such as physiotherapy, then arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery is offered to either perform meniscal repair or removal of tear (partial meniscectomy). Only certain types of tears are amenable for meniscal repair. This procedure results in improvement of persistent mechanical symptoms in the knee joint.
Osteoarthritis of hip and knee joint is common causes for pain in the leg affecting mobility. Bursitis and Tendonitis around the hip and knee can also result in in pain around these joints. Clinical and radiological assessment can usually confirm the cause. Subsequent treatment may involve different non operative measures including injection therapy. Osteoarthritic pain can be improved by injection of steroid, hyaluronic acid and platelet rich plasma (PRP). Steroid injections can also be administered (preferably with ultrasound scan) to improve painful conditions such as bursitis and tendonitis.
